Implants: Are You a Candidate?

Are you missing one or some of your teeth? Losing your teeth can be very difficult and sometimes even embarrassing. If you have suffered the challenges of tooth loss, then you probably have, at some point, considered getting dental implants – and you should. After all, dental implants are among the longest-lasting and most effective restoration solution for those who want to replace their missing teeth.

However, not everyone is a viable candidate for implants. There are a lot of factors to be considered before you can have it done. If you are interested and you are wondering if it’s the ideal solution for you, read on and find out more about what makes one a good dental implant candidate.

In a nutshell, you can say that dental implant candidates have these characteristics:

  • They have good oral hygiene.
  • They have healthy gums.
  • They do not have autoimmune disorders or diabetes which could affect their healing.
  • They are not receiving bisphosphonate medications.
  • They do not smoke, or they are at least willing to quit smoking during the process.
  • They have enough bone density to support the implants.
  • They are willing to commit to the long process of getting dental implants which could last up to twelve months.

From the criteria listed above, probably the most important is for the candidate to have sufficient bone structure in his or her jaw to hold the dental implants. If you do not have enough bone density in your jaw, the implants won’t be able to handle all the stresses and extreme forces that it will experience, including regular chewing.

Gum Diseases Disqualify You

Gum diseases are a common contributing factor to a candidate’s disqualification for a dental implant. If you are suffering from a gum disease, you will have to wait until that is treated. Once that periodontal treatment is completed, you may then proceed with the dental implants, granted that you meet the other criteria.

We know how important it is to have your smile restored, and indeed, dental implants are among the best ways to achieve that.
