In the first part of this blog series, we talked about what a smile makeover is and some of the things that are taken into consideration for a smile makeover, as well as what aspects of your smile your dentist could improve.

In this particular blog, we want to cover some of a smile makeover’s aesthetic components.

During the planning stage for your smile makeover, your cosmetic dentist will evaluate some attributes of your teeth with you. Some of those attributes include:

The Proportions of Your Teeth

A quick examination of your teeth will be performed by your cosmetic dentist to see if they are in proper proportion with each other. For most people, a pleasing smile means having two central front teeth that are dominant with a 4-to-5 width to length ratio. This is the proportion guide that dictates the width and length of all the other teeth in the aesthetic zone that tells whether or not the smile line is balanced.

The Smile Line

This imaginary line goes along the edges of your upper teeth that start from one side to another. Ideally, the curve of your lower lip when you are smiling should be the same as this imaginary smile line. This point of reference can help determine the length of your new teeth.

The Length of the Tooth

Long teeth can give you a youthful appearance. As a person ages, his or her teeth get worn and torn, often resulting in shorter teeth. Another thing that could make your teeth look shorter would be a gummy smile.  An example of treatments that can be done is lengthening and reshaping of the two front central teeth using porcelain veneers or composite bonding. In the case of a gummy smile, you may be provided with a treatment that can modify the gum line and add the appearance of length.

Texture and Characterization of the Tooth

Your crowns or veneers can be characterized to lend a more masculine or feminine appearance. Of course, that is in addition to ensuring a match to your natural teeth’s look and feel, or those that you want to achieve.

Know that all these components can affect your overall facial appearance. For instance, a slimming effect can be achieved when a round-faced individual has long and square teeth.

In the next part of this blog series, we’ll give you some tips on how you can maintain the results of your smile makeover so you get to enjoy it for years and years!
