You may be new to dentures or you may have been wearing them for years. Either way, there are probably times when you worried about how secured they are in your mouth. If your denture doesn’t fit you well or you’re simply looking for added security, then denture adhesive is something you should consider.

Denture adhesives come in a variety of forms including paste, gel, powder, and pads. If you haven’t tried any of these, it may be a little confusing to choose one that is right for you. Well, we are here to give you some information about denture adhesives to help you decide:

First of all, what is a denture adhesive?

It is a product that you simply apply to the underside of your denture which comes into contact with your gums when you wear it. It basically creates a layer between the gums and the denture, making it more difficult for the denture to slip out of place. You can use it for both partial and full dentures that need extra security.

What types of denture adhesives are available?

Like we have mentioned, adhesives can come in various forms. Those in gels or pastes are directly applied to the denture. Powder needs to be mixed with water before applying the mixture to the denture. The pad, or seals as some call them, are first trimmed to fit your denture. The pad also needs to be moistened first before you wear the denture.

Do you need it?

In general, if your denture fits you really well, adhesive is not necessary. But if you feel that you need help in keeping it in place, you should first speak with your dentist about getting your denture refitted. As time passes, the supporting structure of your mouth can change and may affect the way your denture fits. Ill-fitting dentures are not only uncomfortable but they may also cause soreness and further damage to the rest of your remaining teeth. Serious fitting problems are not solved by denture adhesive.

How will it affect your teeth and dentures?

While they will not directly harm your teeth and dentures, they can still become unsanitary if you do not clean them away every night. Remember that your dentures should always be taken out when you’re sleeping and should not be stored with adhesives still on them. Also, denture adhesives are not meant to be used for more than once and failing to clean it off can result to a buildup of bacteria and even infections.
